Drawing on the insights from the International Encyclopedia of Higher Education Systems and Institutions, this panel will address key trends in contemporary higher education research in Europe, Asia and Pacific, Latin America and Africa, Arab and Middle Eastern Countries. The panelists, all editors of the Encyclopedia, will also discuss the making of the International Encyclopedia.  The International Encyclopedia of Higher Education Systems and Institutions aims to map the field of higher education studies for the 21st century, reflecting the significant transformations in higher education and the challenges ahead for future research.  It includes a presentation of almost 150 national higher education systems and almost 360 thematic entries. Twenty scholars participated as editors and about 540 authors wrote articles for thematic and systemic sections.

About the Panelists

 

Pedro Nuno Teixeira Headshot

Pedro Nuno Teixeira [pedrotx@fep.up.pt / https://www.cipes.pt] is Director of CIPES - the Center for Research in Higher Education Policies and Professor at the Faculty of Economics at the University of Porto. He has served as an adviser on Higher Education and Science to the President of Portugal since April 2016. He was Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs at the University of Porto (2014-208) and was also a member of Portugal’s National Council of Education (2014-2018). He has also served on the evaluation panels for the European University Association (EUA) and the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA). He is also a member of the Board of Governors and Secretary General of the Consortium of Higher Education Researchers (CHER), a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA), and an Associate Researcher of the Program for Research on Private Higher Education (PROPHE).

Jung Cheol Shin Headshot

Jung Cheol Shin is Professor at Seoul National University. He served for the Korea Ministry of Education for about 20 years. His research interests are higher education policy, knowledge and social development, and academic profession. He is co-editor-in-chief of the book series Knowledge Studies in Higher Education (Springer). He is an editorial board member of Studies in Higher Education, Tertiary Education and Management, and Higher Education Forum. His book publications include University Rankings (2011), Institutionalization of World-Class University (2012), Teaching and Research in Contemporary Higher Education (2014), The Future of the Post-Massified University at the Crossroads (2014), Mass Higher Education Development in East Asia (2015), and Doctoral Education for the Knowledge Society (2018).

Elizabeth Balbachevsky Headshot

Elizabeth Balbachevsky is Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of São Paulo (USP), São Paulo, Brazil; and Director of the Research Center on Public Policy at the University's Institute for Advanced Studies. Between 2017 and 2018, she held the general coordination of internationalization policies for higher education at Brazil's Ministry of Education. She was Fulbright New Century Scholar for 2005-2006 and Erasmus Mundus Scholar at the European Master's in Higher Education Programme (2009) at the University of Tampere, Finland, where she still teaches on the recent developments on HE in Latin America.

Goolam Mohamedbhai Headshot

Goolam Mohamedbhai obtained his Bachelor’s and Doctorate degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Manchester, UK, and later did his postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley under a US Government Fulbright-Hays Award. He joined the University of Mauritius in 1972 and served as its Vice-Chancellor from 1995 to 2005. He was Secretary-General of the Association of African Universities, President of the International Association of Universities, and a member and Vice-Chair of the Governing Council of the United Nations University. He is the recipient of several honorary doctorates and awards. Mohamedbhai operates as an independent consultant in higher education, with special interest in Africa. He has widely published on issues related to higher education in Africa. He is currently the Chair of the Consultative Advisory Group of the World Bank’s Partnership for Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology (PASET) in Africa project. He is also a member of the Regional Steering Committee of the World Bank’s Project on African Centres of Excellence for Eastern and Southern Africa, the Council of the Mauritius Academy of Science and Technology and the Board of the University World News (Africa).

Manja Klemenčič Headshot

Manja Klemenčič (https://scholar.harvard.edu/manja_klemencic) is Lecturer on Sociology and Lecturer in General Education at Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Harvard University and Associate Researcher at Centre for Educational Policy Studies, Faculty of Education, University of Ljubljana. Her major research contribution is in the study of student governments and student representation which is part of her broader research agenda on student agency and the impact of students on higher education. She has over 100 publications and over 60 keynotes and invited lectures on a broad array of higher education topics. Her latest publications include the The Routledge Handbook of Student Centered Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (Routledge, 2020, co-edited with Sabine Hoidn) and thematic section on Elite and Mass Higher Education in The International Encyclopedia of Higher Education Systems and Institutions (Springer Nature, 2020). Since 2014, Klemenčič serves as Editor-in-Chief of European Journal of Higher Education (Routledge/Taylor & Francis), and since 2015 as Co-Editor of the academic book series Understanding Student Experiences of Higher Education (Bloomsbury). Klemenčič has acted as a consultant for the European Union, UNESCO, World Bank and national governments.
